Both. Over the twenty years this research has been collected around the world, researchers have looked at both forms - obviously exercise designed to increase muscle bulk will be less likely to show overall weight loss - in which case good studies, like the Heritage and Donnelly studies define actual fat loss. It is important to realise that the experts who have reviewed this issue of relative contribution were actually hopeful of finding a greater effect of exercise with weight loss. Many of the studies were run or supervised by exercise physiologists who were keen to show a benefit. I have been regularly looking into this field every couple of years for the last ten years, but I would be interested in seeing any studies that you or readers can find that meet the inclusion criteria which are: 1) long term - ideally 12 months - prospective trial, 2) diet is kept unchanged, 3) control group, 4) exercise 4/7 for 45m minimum and most important: 5) published in a respected peer-reviewed journal. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi,
Do you know if in these studies, the exercise was aerobic only, or a combination of aerobic and weight training?

Alleluia!
A friend was telling me last week that when she wants to drop some weight she STOPS her PT sessions, as she finds that she gets too hungry and so finds the dietary restriction too hard.

Hi Dr G, once again you have nailed the issue so succinctly!! The upside is that I am "mindful" not to negate the benefits of exercise by eating the wrong things so casually!

I would like to purchase your latest book because I love the way you express ideas. Can you pls let us know if we can buy it directly through your site or where we can purchase off the shelf.

Once again, always love to read your wise and wonderful and often witty "west" words (sorry got carried away there!)

Best wishes, Claire S

..and on deeper reflection.. we instinctively look for love and friendship before food... example; we will often look for people to have lunch with before we decide what to have for lunch
