Good Article on EMDR

EMDR imageThis is a reasonably good, recent article on EMDR from the ABC nicely summarised with this quote:

“It’s obviously something fairly new and I suppose some people might see it as a bit radical, but it’s in reality a non-invasive therapy and we’ve seen great results.”

While it has been around now for over 25 years (and most of us practicing it gave up the finger waving and went to tapping or audiotones around 15 years ago) it is amusing to see it described as ‘fairly new’! But I’m not complaining …

Good afternoon. Totally agree with this article. I have been having EMDR with my psychotherapist who is also a psychiatrist (Dr Ratna Ratna) for a long time. Revolutionised my life. I have a very similar story to jeni except it was a high profile paedophile ring organised by my parents in their coastal hotel in Ireland for 15 years. People such as Sir Ted Heath prime minister of Britain at the time for example. Eventually basically thrown onto streets of Dublin as I was too old at 17 for parents clients. Eventually rescued by Salvation Army who organised a humanitarian visa for me to go to Australia. Australia was a very different country with compassion and no Duttons etc. I could speak no English and had never been to school and was completely undocumented. We had to make a guess based on bone scan as to my real age which was actually two years approximately than I thought. I too after coming out of suppression after 35 years thanks to Cardinal Pell revelations in 2012. Have severe DID unfortunately with two introjectors who are intent on my death. Rest of alters are young and beautiful but so traumatised. At the moment in traction after three weeks in icu for yet another suicide attempt where I broke my back. I self harm constantly and as dissociated when I switch to alter I cut. Arteries, muscle to the bone. Never remember a thing. Just go back to bed oblivious. I absolutely think your book is truly amazing and thank you both for
Validating women with DID due to abuse. It has really helped me and I am now listening to it on Audible. Congratulations. I also have also written a book on my experience and survival and am currently writing a second. Called You Will Bear Witness by Erin Fado. Not my real name to protect my husband childrens privacy. Also blog under same name and Facebook group. Again congratulations to you both.

Thank you for your reply. Of course you are absolutely right about audible – I was listening to the wrong book and realised it two chapters in. The book is terrific and you in particular explain DID and EMDR really well. Both incredibly difficult to explain to people on the street and even more infuriating us the appalling attitude of the psychiatric community and mental health facilities towards us. Eg I have chronic suicidality and self harm and now have to not tell about my DiD due to repeated disbelief in DID as a diagnosis and am sick of being told I have BPD despite 3 psychiatrists diagnosing DID however the clinics they work at will not accept it as they operate on a three week model. If I have to attend another cbt/ DBT inpatient program I will scream!!! My psychotherapist is awesome and but for her our family would never cope.

I need a safe place at times multiple times a year but NO all that is offered is public system which is triggering and appallingly for trauma patients. Twice I have been assaulted in public system. Do you have any recommendations of clinics that might offer eg seven day admissions at anniversaries, dates after ODs etc. I just need a safe place to go. Many thanks Michele
