In fact, just talking about traumatic experiences – i.e. as with traditional psychotherapy and most counselling – has been found to make traumatised individuals worse. This is why I do not allow my patients to talk too much about their trauma until we are ready to do the EMDR. We want the distress of this process to link directly to the healing from it.
